I remember as a grade schooler loving his artwork before I had even read my first comic book...I'd pretty much buy the latest issue of Creepy or Eerie just for his cover art.
If you ask me he belongs in the same class with Dali, Picasso & Warhol
If you've never seen the Bakshi animated movie "Fire & Ice" based on his work, it's very much worth buying if not just for the amazing documentary "Painting with Fire" that's also included.
